  1. Settled 2,000 years ago by Malayan-Indonesian people, whose
  2. descendants still predominate.  A unified kingdom ruled in the
  3. 18th and 19th Centuries.  The island became a French protectorate
  4. in 1885 and a colony in 1896.  Independence came on June 26,
  5. 1960.  A coup came in 1972 due to inflation and continued French
  6. domination of the economy.  French owned financial industries and
  7. concerns were nationalized.  French bases and a U.S. space tracking
  8. station were closed.  Chinese aid was soon established.  In
  9. 1979, the government conducted systematic arrest and expulsion of
  10. foreigners and repression of strikes.                    @
